I am such a great advocator of creative writing to heal. I know through my own healing journey, writing has been something that has not only released woundings that I sometimes was unaware were even there, it also assisted in directing me to healings that needed to be addressed at that moment in time and more than anything, it became a great tool for release.
The healing power of writing
The moment that truly woke me up to the healing power of writing was when I started writing my book. I would sit and just write about some of the experience I had had from personal healing and from being a healing facilitator and when I went back to re-read what I had written, there were more times than I can count, that what was on the page suddenly made total sense to me. There were these absolutely massive epiphanies, completely unknown to me until my re-read. So very often we say specific things that lead us to believe that we, ourselves are aware of what needs to be healed, what needs to be acknowledged and released but very often we miss the absolute core of the issue. This is where writing comes in, as we write for ourselves with complete authenticity and without fear of judgement, scorn or prejudice, our subconscious is then allowed to come through with messages of direction from our higher selves.
The comment I get most from people is that they are not creative. They cannot write skilfully and thus, this healing modality would probably not work for them. Well, here is the thing. We are all designed with an incredibly intricate Energetic guidance system known as the Chakra system. Two out of the seven major Chakras REQUIRE – please read that again – they REQUIRE, not want – creativity in order to function properly. It also needs to be noted that in order for us to be fully balanced in our lives, our ENTIRE Chakra system needs to be functioning properly. It is therefore an absolute impossibility that we have a system requiring creativity and yet we are born without the very thing that is a requirement for a healthy, balanced life. See where I am going here?
The second chakra in our system, the Sacral Chakra is the seat of our emotions and our energetic womb space. What do wombs do? They nurture the creation of life. Being so strongly associated with our emotions also means that creativity would be a natural go to – in order to heal our emotional state. The fifth chakra in our system, the Throat Chakra, also requires creativity. This is our communication centre, the place where we create our lives authentically. How then do we do this if we do not express ourselves honestly? Creativity allows us to express ourselves with authenticity.
Ok so, maybe you are not the next Elizabeth Gilbert – I get it. Writing to heal doesn’t require Pulitzer prizes, it requires a sincere desire to move forward in your life, overcome your fears and to try and logic out and release hurts that keep you trapped in unhealthy spaces. This is one of the most profoundly powerful ways to heal as it is one of the most profoundly personal healing modalities. It is just you and the written word.
Words are magic
Writing enables us to heal in a number of different ways. We are able to re-write the past, we are able to visit moments that stole a part of us and we get to take those parts back. We get to right the wrongs we have held ourselves, prisoners, to, we get to have final conversations, speak words left unsaid and make amends in what would seem like impossible circumstances. Don Miguel Ruiz is a great advocator that our words are magic and I could not agree more. We create our realities with words that are thought, spoken and/or written. It then is no surprise that they too can heal.
So many of my clients that come for crossing over sessions say that they wish they had just said that they were sorry, or that they loved the person more. That can literally all be remedied. I teach my clients/students to not be so stoic in their perceptions of what specific writing styles are for. I had a friend who had such a cathartic experience by releasing so much hurt, anger and grief after the death of her father. On my advice she wrote him a long letter saying everything she could never say in person or never got the chance to say. Nobody saw the letter but her, yet it shifted her so massively out of a negative energy surrounding her lifelong relationship with her father. (I do believe the letter was well over 22 pages long.) A simple typed up or handwritten dialogue can be used to energetically change the way a conversation went. Releasing the guilt, hurt or even anger that came to reside within, after said conversation.
There are so many varied ways of being able to heal through writing, my suggestion is that you find one that you are comfortable with, letter writing, dialogues or even just storytelling. Write these pieces, honestly making amends, asking for forgiveness, (especially from yourself!!) and even just letting someone that is no longer with you that you love them. Language is the gift of expression from the Divine. There are very few of us that do not have this gift, I beseech you, use it to empower yourself, set yourself free and to move forward to a life of authenticity.
